PHYLLIS LILJEGREN NEWSON
I paint color, design, texture and.... energy ! The subject is the means to that end. Whether narrative or abstract, my hope is that the viewer will be
able to enter the painting and experience the joy, sadness, surprise, fear, quiet, noise, calm, mystery . . . the energy... that I feel, and, that they bring
to the work themselves !
In this particular series I discovered new energy and direction for myself and for my work while going through boxes of old photographs which I
found in the attic of my childhood home. I am particularly taken with the “attitudes” projected from these black and white images: courage, resolve,
strength, community, innocence, joy, humor... LIFE ... ! Many of the subjects I chose to use in these paintings are of my own family, others are those
who touched the lives of my family in some special way ... why else were their pictures in the boxes?!
It is an exciting journey and the many interesting and wonderful “Photo Box people” are enriching my life as I make their acquaintance.
